Etosha Pan
Lake Vast Namibian salt pan central to Etosha National Park
A broad, shallow salt pan in northern Namibia within a larger conservation area, known for exposed salt crust, seasonal waterbodies and surrounding game; safari visitors watch for wildlife congregations and wading birds after rains.
Etosha Pan is a vast salt pan in northern Namibia forming the central feature of Etosha National Park and recognised as one of the region’s major natural landmarks. The pan is an extensive, flat saline depression that can appear as a white, shimmering plain in dry conditions.
The pan and its bordering grasslands attract migratory birds and concentration of large mammals when seasonal rains bring water, and the park’s permanent waterholes provide predictable wildlife viewing points. Many visitors base themselves at park camps to observe elephants, lions, giraffe and other species that come to drink at these waterholes.
The Etosha Pan formed through long-term climatic and geological processes that left a saline depression in the landscape; it is largely dry most of the year but can hold shallow water after rains. The wider area has been managed as a protected national park since the 20th century to conserve its distinctive ecosystems and resident wildlife.
Geographically the pan lies in northern Namibia within Etosha National Park and is accessible from regional towns and park entrances; park camps and roads are arranged around the pan to facilitate wildlife observation.
- Scale: One of the largest salt pans in Africa, largely contained within Etosha National Park and visible as a bright expanse from satellite imagery.
- Viewing tip: Best wildlife viewing typically occurs in the dry season at permanent waterholes where animals gather, while the pan itself may hold shallow seasonal water after rains.
What to See #
- Central pan: The broad, pale salt flat that forms the central floor of the park and fills seasonally with shallow water, visible as a white expanse from roads and lookout points.
- Waterholes and camps: Park waterholes and camps such as Okaukuejo and Namutoni, which provide permanent or seasonal water sources attracting game and offering concentrated wildlife viewing.
How to Get to Etosha Pan #
The Etosha Pan is located inside Etosha National Park in northern Namibia. The park has several main gates: Anderson Gate (east), Namutoni Gate (northeast), and Okaukuejo (south-central) provide access to different sections. Most international visitors fly into Windhoek or northern airports (Ondangwa/Tsumeb) and drive to park gates; distances inside the park are long, so plan fuel and water. National park fees apply at entry.
Tips for Visiting Etosha Pan #
- Bring polarized sunglasses and a wide-angle lens for the pan's vast, reflective flats at sunrise and sunset.
- Avoid the pan itself during the wet season; the best game viewing is along the western and southern park roads where springs attract wildlife.
- Plan accommodations inside or just outside Etosha National Park gates - sunrise drives from camp are the most wildlife-productive hours.
Best Time to Visit Etosha Pan #
Best visited during the dry season (May-October) for predictable wildlife at waterholes and clearer roads.
