The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia is an outdoor museum dedicated to Latvia’s rural and folk architecture and lifeways, located near Riga in Ropaži Municipality. The institution was established in the early 20th century to collect and preserve traditional buildings and rural heritage.
The site contains more than a hundred relocated and reconstructed buildings - farmhouses, barns, windmills and chapels - arranged by historic regions to illustrate different vernacular traditions. Visitors can walk between clusters representing Latvia’s regions, view traditional construction techniques and, during the warmer months, see craft demonstrations and seasonal events that show historic rural practices.
Founded in the 1920s as part of a national movement to preserve folk culture, the museum’s collections grew through the 20th century by moving historic structures to the park and restoring them as exhibition buildings. It remains one of the main repositories of material rural heritage in Latvia.
The museum sits on the shore of Lake Jugla, to the northeast of central Riga in Ropaži Municipality, and is accessible by regional road and public transport from the city.
