Eternal Golden Castle

The Eternal Golden Castle is a 19th-century coastal fortress in Tainan, Taiwan, built as a defensive installation in the late Qing period. It was constructed to protect local harbors and coastal approaches and remains one of the region’s preserved military sites.

Visitors encounter thick masonry ramparts, artillery platforms, and a surrounding moat designed for coastal defence. The site includes restored cannon positions and accessible defensive works that illustrate late 19th-century fortification design. Walkways around the ramparts provide views across the nearby waterways.

The fort was erected by Qing authorities in the 1870s in response to maritime security concerns and served as a garrisoned coastal battery. Over time it transitioned from military use to preservation as a cultural and historical site with conservation work to maintain the masonry and defensive features.

Geographically the castle sits in Tainan on Taiwan’s southwestern coast in a low coastal plain setting. It is reachable from Tainan city and is positioned to face nearby sea channels that the fort originally protected.
