Estatuas De Los Menceyes
Monument Group of statues commemorating indigenous Guanche kings
Public bronze statues representing Guanche menceyes (pre‑Spanish rulers) in the Canary Islands; visitors interested in indigenous history and local townscapes stop for photos and context.
The Estatuas De Los Menceyes are a group of modern commemorative sculptures in the town of Candelaria on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. They represent the island’s pre-Hispanic rulers and are a visible civic monument in the town centre.
The principal element is a row of nine statues displayed in the town’s main plaza, positioned close to the waterfront and to the religious complex. The sculptures are interpreted as a collective installation that commemorates the Guanche menceyes and are frequently photographed alongside the nearby church.
The figures depict the nine menceyes, the indigenous Guanche kings who ruled Tenerife before the Castilian conquest in the 15th century. The statues are modern monuments erected to recognise and visualise that pre-Hispanic history for residents and visitors.
The installation sits in the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias beside the Basilica of Our Lady of Candelaria in the municipality of Candelaria on Tenerife’s east coast, immediately inland from the sea.
- Setting: Located in the main town plaza beside the town basilica, forming a visible group interpreted together by visitors.
- Number of statues: Comprises nine figures that represent the pre-Hispanic Guanche rulers of Tenerife.
