Main image

Esja is a volcanic mountain range visible from Reykjavík in southwest Iceland and forms a recognizable skyline to the city. The range is a popular local outdoor destination for hiking and scrambling.

A network of trails of differing steepness and duration leads to multiple ridges and viewpoints that overlook Reykjavík and Faxaflói Bay; trails are commonly used year-round though conditions vary with snow and ice in winter. Popular routes gain a few hundred metres of elevation within 1-3 hours, with steeper ascents to higher ridgelines requiring experience and proper footwear.

The range consists of volcanic rocks formed by Tertiary and later volcanic activity that shaped much of southwest Iceland’s landscape; it has no single construction date but represents repeated eruptions and glacial modification. Over time the slopes have been used for grazing and, more recently, for recreation and trail maintenance by local authorities.

Esja lies about 10 km northeast of central Reykjavík across the Hvalfjörður inlet in the Capital Region. The mountains rise directly from coast-side suburbs and are accessed from several car parks and trailheads on their western and southern flanks.

  • Access from Reykjavík: Several well-marked trails of varying difficulty lead up from suburbs northeast of Reykjavík, with the closest trailheads about 10 km from the city centre.

How to Get to Esja #

Esja is the mountain range just north of Reykjavík and is the nearest popular hiking area to the city. By car it is about 10-15 km from central Reykjavík (roughly a 15-25 minute drive depending on exact start point); follow the roads north out of town to the trailhead areas (several small carparks at popular starting points).

From central Reykjavík you can also use local buses to reach the edge of the Esja area and then walk from the parking/trailhead - most trailheads require a short walk (typically 5-20 minutes) from where you can park or be dropped off.

Tips for Visiting Esja #

  • Aim for a clear day and start early (or late afternoon) to get best views of Reykjavík and the surrounding coastline from the popular summit routes-visibility is the main factor for rewarding panoramas.
  • Head for the Þverfellshorn ridge if you want a commonly used objective with panoramic views; because trails are short and popular, beginning your hike early on weekdays helps avoid crowding on narrow sections.
