Escambray Mountains

Escambray Mountains are a central Cuban mountain range spanning parts of Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus and Villa Clara provinces and forming one of the island’s principal upland areas. The massif rises to around 1,140 metres at its highest point and contains forested plateaus, valleys and karst features.

The range is visited for its network of trails, waterfalls and natural pools, with several marked routes leading to cascades and viewpoints. Notable outdoor highlights include protected areas with trails of a few kilometres to multi-day hikes, reservoir shorelines used for recreation, and cave systems accessible via guided trips. Mountain roads and trailheads are usually reached from coastal towns such as Trinidad and ports on the southern side.

Historically the Escambray was the scene of armed resistance and government counterinsurgency operations in the early 1960s; it later became important for conservation and eco-tourism. Over the 20th century the foothills and valleys have seen development of protected parks and small tourism infrastructure.

Geographically the range sits in central Cuba, inland from the southern coast and roughly in the corridor between the cities of Cienfuegos and Trinidad. The terrain is a mix of steep slopes, plateaus and river valleys set between the central plains and the coastal belt.

• Best time to visit: Best hiking and waterfall visits occur between November and April when rainfall is lower and trails are drier.
• Access and trails: Road access is limited in places and many trails are steep; local guides are commonly used for longer hikes and cave visits.

What to See #

• Topes de Collantes: A nature reserve and park in the central part of the range famous for hiking trails, waterfalls and karst caves; popular trailheads are accessed from the town of Trinidad and other southern foothill villages.
• Pico San Juan: The highest summit in the Escambray massif, rising to about 1,140 metres and offering panoramic views across central Cuba on clear days.
• Hanabanilla Lake: A mid-mountain reservoir used for hydroelectric power and recreation, set among forested slopes and accessed by roads from nearby towns.
• Salto del Caburní: A well-known cascade and swimming spot within the range, reached by marked trails inside the protected areas.
