Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region
Historical Site Historic central European mining region with preserved mining heritage
Bordering Saxony, the Erzgebirge mining region preserves centuries of silver and tin mining: shafts, drying houses and miners’ towns with hiking trails and mining museums.
The Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region is a historic mining landscape straddling the border between Saxony in Germany and Bohemia in the Czech Republic, significant for its long history of ore extraction and associated technologies. Mining activity in the region shaped settlements, industry and the environment over many centuries.
The inscribed area comprises a dispersed set of towns, mine workings, water-management installations and processing sites that together illustrate the scale and organisation of pre-industrial and early industrial mining. Visitors encounter preserved mine shafts, galleries, historic buildings and engineered hydraulic systems that were essential to deep mining.
Mining began in the region in the medieval period and expanded greatly in the late Middle Ages and early modern era, driving technological innovation in ventilation, drainage and ore processing. The landscape records the social and technical systems of a long-standing mining economy and its impact on settlement patterns.
The region occupies the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří) along the German-Czech border, mainly within Saxony on the German side, and comprises a linear mountain range with valleys, towns and former mining sites.
- Transboundary composition: The mining landscape is transboundary, extending across the German-Czech border and composed of many component sites that together document centuries of ore extraction and technological innovation.
