Erfurt Cathedral

Erfurt Cathedral (Mariendom) is a Gothic cathedral on the Domberg in Erfurt, Thuringia, that serves as the city’s principal medieval church and landmark.

The cathedral’s high Gothic interior and choir, its medieval fittings and the large medieval bell known as the Gloriosa (cast in 1497). The cathedral and the neighbouring St. Severus Church form a prominent paired ensemble on the Domplatz.

A church has occupied the site since the medieval period; the present Gothic fabric dates largely to the high and late Middle Ages, with subsequent restorations and fittings added over later centuries. The Gloriosa and other elements reflect the cathedral’s importance in the late medieval city.

The building stands on the cathedral hill in Erfurt’s historic centre, directly adjacent to St. Severus and overlooking the old town streets below.
