Erdenet is Mongolia’s planned copper-mining city dominated by a huge open-pit mine and Soviet-era architecture. It attracts visitors interested in industrial history, regional culture, and nearby steppe landscapes.

Getting around: Walk the compact center around the Erdenet mine museum; use yellow metered taxis and shared furgon minibuses for routes to suburbs and intercity buses to Ulaanbaatar.

Infrastructure & convenience: Soviet-era infrastructure gives reliable electricity and decent MobiCom/G-Mobile coverage; supermarkets cluster on Lenin Street, but medical and ATM services are limited outside main avenues.

Local tips: Carry Mongolian tugrik; older residents speak Russian, so polite greetings in Mongolian or Russian go far. Dress warmly-winters are bitter and long.

Dining: Eat buuz and khuushuur at central food stalls near the Mine Museum; try airag and hearty mutton stews, as vegetarian options stay scarce.

Erdenet grew up around the Erdenet Mining Complex, one of the world's largest copper-molybdenum mines, opened in the 1970s.

How to Get to Erdenet#

Erdenet is primarily reached overland from Ulaanbaatar or, less commonly, by occasional regional flights to the town’s small airport. The main international gateway for most visitors is Chinggis Khaan International Airport (ULN) in Ulaanbaatar; from there you continue to Erdenet by bus, minivan or - when available - by train or charter flight.

By Air

Chinggis Khaan International Airport (ULN): International arrivals land at Ulaanbaatar’s Chinggis Khaan International Airport (ULN). From the airport take the airport shuttle/express bus into Ulaanbaatar (typically 3,000-5,000 MNT, about 40-60 minutes) or a taxi (around 40,000-60,000 MNT, 40-60 minutes) to the city. From Ulaanbaatar you can continue to Erdenet by intercity bus or minivan (see By Train & Bus card) - road travel to Erdenet is the most common onward option and takes roughly 6-8 hours.

Erdenet Airport (limited/charter service): Erdenet has a small regional airport used mainly for charters and occasional flights rather than frequent scheduled services. If you arrive here, the town centre is a short taxi ride (typically 3,000-6,000 MNT, 10-20 minutes). Most international visitors still route through Ulaanbaatar and travel overland to Erdenet.

By Train & Bus

Train: Erdenet is served by the national rail network at Erdenet Railway Station. Passenger services on the line are infrequent and timetables can change; when running, trains from Ulaanbaatar generally take many hours (often 8-12+ hours) and fares vary by class (typical ranges around 7,000-20,000 MNT depending on seat/berth and service). Book ahead where possible and expect slower, less frequent service than road transport.

Bus / Minivan: The most common way to reach Erdenet from Ulaanbaatar is by intercity bus or shared minivan (microbus). Typical travel time by road is about 6-8 hours depending on weather and road conditions. Tickets commonly range from about 15,000-25,000 MNT; departures operate several times a day from Ulaanbaatar’s intercity operators and private minivan stands. This is the most reliable and frequent option for most travelers.

How to Get Around Erdenet#

Erdenet is easiest to navigate by road - intercity buses and shared minivans from Ulaanbaatar are the most reliable way in. Once in town, short trips are handled best with local taxis or on foot; trains and flights exist but are infrequent and should be checked in advance.

  • Intercity bus / Minivan (15,000-25,000 MNT) - Shared minibuses and privately operated intercity buses are the most frequent and practical option between Ulaanbaatar and Erdenet. Expect journeys of about 6-8 hours depending on traffic and road conditions; minibuses leave several times daily and are the fastest regular overland option. Buy tickets at departure points in Ulaanbaatar on the day (or book in advance in high season) and be prepared for basic comfort on longer runs.
  • Train (7,000-20,000 MNT) - Erdenet Railway Station connects the town to the national rail network, but passenger trains are less frequent and slower than road services. When available, trains can be a cheaper, more relaxed option for overnight travel; expect long journey times (often 8-12+ hours) and variable schedules. Check Mongolian Railways timetables ahead and book a reserved berth if possible for overnight trips.
  • Domestic flights / Erdenet Airport (3,000-6,000 MNT (airport taxi to centre)) - Erdenet’s airport handles limited/charter flights rather than daily scheduled domestic services in most seasons. If a flight is available it’s the quickest way to reach town; otherwise travellers fly into Ulaanbaatar (ULN) and continue overland. If you do land at Erdenet Airport, the town centre is a short taxi ride away.
  • Taxis & Ride services (2,000-8,000 MNT (typical short trips)) - Local taxis and private cars are the most convenient way to get around inside Erdenet and for short trips to nearby sites. Prices are low by international standards but there’s no universal meter standard; agree a fare before starting (short inner-city rides commonly a few thousand MNT). Ride-hailing apps are available in Ulaanbaatar and may be limited in Erdenet, so expect to use local taxi numbers or arrange rides through hotels.
  • Local buses / Marshrutka (500-2,000 MNT) - Erdenet has some local bus services and shared fixed-route taxis (marshrutkas) that serve neighbourhoods and the town outskirts. Services are inexpensive and useful for short distances, but timetables and routes are informal and service can be irregular. For convenience and clarity, use taxis for tight schedules or if you’re carrying luggage.
  • Walking - Erdenet’s central district is compact and easy to explore on foot; many shops, restaurants and mines-related facilities are within walking distance of the centre. Walking is the best way to soak up local life and get between nearby points quickly. In winter be prepared for cold, icy conditions and dress accordingly.
