Main image

Erdene Zuu Monastery is a historic Buddhist monastery complex in Övörkhangai Province near the town of Kharkhorin (the site of historic Karakorum) in central Mongolia. It is one of Mongolia’s oldest surviving monastic complexes.

The layout features an outer ring of stupas and a collection of temple halls, assembly buildings and smaller chapels within an enclosed compound; many buildings contain statues, wall paintings and ritual objects. The site also includes a museum housing liturgical and historical items.

The monastery was established in the late 16th century by the Oirat leader Abtai Sain Khan following the formal adoption of Tibetan Buddhism by various Mongol leaders, and it served as a major religious centre through the early modern period. It sustained damage and losses during the 20th century but many structures have been conserved or rebuilt and the complex remains an active and restored religious site.

Erdene Zuu sits in the Orkhon Valley near Kharkhorin on the broad, grassy plains of central Mongolia, close to the Orkhon River and within a landscape rich in archaeological and historical sites.

  • Foundation: Founded in the late 16th century by Abtai Sain Khan and associated with the early spread of Tibetan Buddhism in Mongolia, the site has long-standing religious significance.
  • Access and context: The surrounding modern town of Kharkhorin (Karakorum) provides the usual base for visits; the monastery sits near the Orkhon Valley, an area with multiple historical sites.

  • Monastic Museum: A monastic museum with religious artifacts, thangka paintings and historical objects collected from the site and surrounding region, displayed in several converted buildings.
