Erdene Zuu Monastery
Religious Site Oldest surviving Mongolian Buddhist monastery complex
Erdene Zuu Monastery near Kharkhorin was built from stones of the old Mongol capital; it contains temples, stupas and museum displays often visited together with nearby archaeological sites.
Erdene Zuu Monastery is a historic Buddhist monastery complex in Övörkhangai Province near the town of Kharkhorin (the site of historic Karakorum) in central Mongolia. It is one of Mongolia’s oldest surviving monastic complexes.
The layout features an outer ring of stupas and a collection of temple halls, assembly buildings and smaller chapels within an enclosed compound; many buildings contain statues, wall paintings and ritual objects. The site also includes a museum housing liturgical and historical items.
The monastery was established in the late 16th century by the Oirat leader Abtai Sain Khan following the formal adoption of Tibetan Buddhism by various Mongol leaders, and it served as a major religious centre through the early modern period. It sustained damage and losses during the 20th century but many structures have been conserved or rebuilt and the complex remains an active and restored religious site.
