Epang Palace
Archaeological Site Qin dynasty imperial palace site near Xi'an
Outside Xi’an in Shaanxi, the Epang Palace ruins relate to the Qin dynasty’s imperial building program. Archaeology-minded visitors and school groups examine foundation remains and onsite exhibits.
Epang Palace was an imperial palace project initiated by the First Emperor of Qin near present-day Xi’an in Shaanxi province, begun in the late 3rd century BC. It was intended as a vast ceremonial and administrative complex but was never completed as originally planned.
Archaeological remains at the site consist primarily of large foundation platforms, earthworks and scattered masonry elements that outline the palace footprint; these remains are displayed in an open archaeological park with interpretive information. The project was interrupted and the site was sacked during the collapse of the Qin dynasty.
Historical records link the palace to the reign of Qin Shi Huang; tradition records that the palace complex was attacked and many wooden and finished elements destroyed in the upheavals at the end of the Qin period, around 206 BC. The present-day area preserves the buried structural remains and visitor facilities for viewing those remains.
The site is located just south of modern Xi’an, at the foot of Mount Li in Shaanxi province, and is accessed from the regional road network serving the Xi’an area.
- Date and context: Construction of the palace began under Qin Shi Huang toward the end of the 3rd century BC and the project was halted and largely destroyed in the turmoil that followed the fall of the Qin state.
- State of the site: Much of what remains today is the large foundation platform and archaeological traces rather than standing palace buildings; the site is presented as an open archaeological area near Xi'an.
What to See #
- Palace foundations: The remaining earthen and masonry foundation platform and associated archaeological features mark the footprint of an imperial palace begun under the First Emperor of Qin; excavated remains are presented in an open-site park.
- Archaeological park: A visitor area and interpretive displays located near the site explain the palace's imperial plan and the events that ended its construction and use in the late Qin period.
