Emmaus Monastery

Emmaus Monastery (Emauzy) in Prague is a historic monastery complex founded in 1347 by Emperor Charles IV to accommodate Benedictine monks from the Holy Land. The site is noted for rare fragments of 14th-century fresco decoration and for its long architectural history.

The interior contains surviving medieval fresco fragments attributed to Lombard artists alongside later Baroque and 19th-century alterations. The complex has served religious, cultural and community functions across the centuries and retains elements from multiple rebuilding campaigns.

Founded explicitly by royal patronage in the mid 14th century, the monastery experienced damage and rebuilding during later conflicts and fires, followed by restorations in subsequent centuries. Its art and architecture document Prague’s medieval monastic culture and later stylistic changes.

The monastery stands in central Prague, on the southeast side of the historic core near Karlovo námestí and the Vyšehrad area, within walking distance of major central Prague districts.
