Elusa (Haluza)
Archaeological Site Ancient Nabataean and Byzantine city ruins in Negev
In the Negev, Elusa (Haluza) reveals Nabatean and Byzantine urban ruins along the Incense Route: streets, cisterns, and church foundations. Archaeological trails and on-site markers explain irrigation, trade networks, and desert urban life.
Elusa, also known by its Arabic name Haluza, is an archaeological site in Israel’s Negev desert that was a Nabatean-founded settlement later prominent in the Roman and Byzantine periods. It served as a regional urban centre with public architecture, street layouts and religious buildings.
Remains at the site include paved streets, foundations of public and religious buildings and material culture illustrating occupation through late antiquity. The site was an important local centre during the Byzantine era and later declined after the early Islamic period.
Archaeological excavations have documented layers of occupation from Nabatean times into the Byzantine period and have revealed standing walls, paved ways and ecclesiastical structures. The ruins are studied and presented as part of the region’s desert archaeological heritage.
Elusa is located in the southern Negev region of Israel, inland from the Mediterranean coast and within the Negev’s arid plains; it is accessible from regional roads connecting Bedouin towns and nearby archaeological attractions.
- Archaeological remains: The site preserves ruins from Nabatean and Byzantine periods including streets, public buildings and churches visible in the archaeological remains.
