Why Visit Eluru? #
Located in Andhra Pradesh, Eluru draws visitors who want an authentic look at regional craft and lively market life. Its handloom clusters and brasswork workshops showcase traditional skills, while nearby Kolleru Lake offers birdwatching and a quieter contrast to town streets. Food is another reason to come: hearty Andhra cuisine-think gongura and fiery biryani-fills local plates. The mix of everyday bazaars, artisan stalls and accessible wetlands makes it a revealing stop on a South Indian cultural route.

How to Get to Eluru
Eluru is easiest to reach by rail - Eluru Railway Station (ELR) sits on the main corridor and has frequent services from Vijayawada (BZA) and other regional centres. The nearest airports are Vijayawada (Gannavaram, VGA) and Rajahmundry (RJA); both require a road transfer or a combination of bus/train to reach Eluru.
Vijayawada (Gannavaram) Airport (VGA): The closest major airport to Eluru is Vijayawada (Gannavaram). By road it’s roughly 55-70 km to Eluru; a direct taxi or app cab takes about 1-1.5 hours and typically costs around ₹1,200-1,800. You can also take an auto or local taxi into Vijayawada city (₹200-400) and then an APSRTC bus or a short train from Vijayawada Junction (BZA) to Eluru (see Train/Bus card).
Rajahmundry Airport (RJA): Rajahmundry is farther east (about 100-120 km). A direct taxi from Rajahmundry airport to Eluru takes about 2-2.5 hours and usually costs in the region of ₹2,000-3,500. APSRTC operates intercity buses on the Rajahmundry-Eluru route (cheaper but slower; see Bus paragraph).
Train: Eluru is served by Eluru Railway Station (ELR), on the main East Coast/Vijayawada corridor; many passenger and express trains stop here. Vijayawada Junction (BZA) is the nearest major rail hub with frequent connections - the local passenger trains to Eluru take around 45-75 minutes and cost in the range of ₹20-₹150 depending on class. For longer trips (Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad) book via IRCTC or at the station; express services save time and are more comfortable.
Bus: APSRTC runs frequent intercity and local services to and from Eluru (Eluru RTC Bus Station). City/short buses are very cheap (around ₹7-₹30); intercity buses to Vijayawada or Rajahmundry typically cost ₹50-₹150 depending on service and distance and take 1-2.5 hours. For comfort choose deluxe/express services and buy tickets at the bus station or via official APSRTC booking channels.
How to Get Around Eluru
For most visitors the quickest approach is to arrive by train at Eluru Railway Station (ELR) or transfer from Vijayawada Airport by taxi and then use autos or app taxis for local movement. Autos and APSRTC buses are the cheapest options; trains are the most reliable for regional trips and app taxis offer convenience when you need luggage or off-hour transfers.
- Train (Indian Railways) (₹20-₹200) - Eluru Railway Station (ELR) is the most practical gateway for regional travel - many passenger and express trains stop here. Short hops from Vijayawada take about 45-75 minutes; fares for unreserved/SL seats are cheap while reserved sleeper/AC tickets cost more. Use IRCTC or station booking counters for advance reservations on long-distance trains and check stopping patterns before you travel.
- APSRTC buses (city & intercity) (₹7-₹150) - APSRTC operates frequent city services and intercity buses linking Eluru with Vijayawada, Rajahmundry and nearby towns. City fares are very low (single digits up to a few dozen rupees); intercity fares vary by distance and service type - ordinary, deluxe or express. Buses are the cheapest option but can be slower and less comfortable than trains for longer trips; buy longer-distance tickets at the bus station for reserved seats.
- Auto-rickshaw (₹30-₹150) - Auto-rickshaws are the go-to for short trips inside Eluru and to/from the bus stand or station. They run on meters for most journeys; expect short rides within town to cost roughly ₹30-₹150 depending on distance. Always insist on the meter or agree a price before setting off - for airport transfers you may need a negotiated fixed fare.
- App taxis (Ola/Uber and private cabs) (₹120-₹450) - App-based taxis (Ola is commonly available; Uber presence varies) and private cabs offer more comfort and fixed fares for airport or longer trips. They are convenient for early/late journeys and if you're carrying luggage, but typically cost more than autos - expect short trips from ₹120 and airport runs in the ₹1,200+ range to Vijayawada. Check surge pricing and confirm pickup points in busy areas.
- Two-wheeler rental (₹300-₹600/day) - Scooter and bike rentals are widely available for day hires and are a practical way to explore Eluru and nearby villages at your own pace. Daily rental rates are typically around ₹300-₹600; you will need ID and sometimes a refundable deposit. Riding in traffic requires caution - wear a helmet and avoid busy peak hours if you're not used to local driving conditions.
- Walking - Eluru's central market area and parts of the old town are walkable for short trips between shops, temples and eateries. Pavements can be uneven and roads busy, so watch for traffic and take care crossing streets. Walking is the best way to soak up local life for short distances.

Nightlife in Eluru #
Eluru’s after-dark scene is low-key and local: think family restaurants, street-food stalls and the occasional small bar clustered around the busier market and station areas. Nights are for relaxed meals, chai shops and walks along well-lit streets rather than clubbing. Practical tip: most places wind down by 11-11:30pm, dress casually, carry cash for smaller eateries and use an auto-rickshaw for short nighttime trips.
