Ellesmere Island
Island Canada's northernmost large island with polar wilderness
High Arctic island in Nunavut, Ellesmere attracts expedition travelers for glaciers, fjords, polar wildlife and research stations in one of Canada’s most remote landscapes.
Ellesmere Island is a large Arctic island in Nunavut, Canada. It is the country’s northernmost large island and contains Barbeau Peak, which rises to 2,616 metres.
The island is dominated by glaciated mountains, fjords and polar desert landscapes across an area of roughly 196,000 square kilometres. Visitors who reach the island encounter extensive icefields, major glaciers, narrow fjords and wildlife such as polar bears and muskox in sparsely visited areas.
The island has been home to Inuit groups for millennia and was visited and mapped by European Arctic expeditions in the 19th century. In the 20th century it gained weather, research and military stations; small settlements such as Alert and Eureka were established for scientific and strategic purposes.
Ellesmere sits in the northern Canadian Arctic Archipelago as part of the Queen Elizabeth Islands, north of Baffin Island and west of northern Greenland. It forms the extreme northern edge of Nunavut.
- Size: The island covers roughly 196,000 square kilometres, making it one of the largest in the Canadian Arctic.

- Quttinirpaaq National Park: A park on the island's northeastern sector protecting polar desert, glaciers and fjords; one of Canada's most northerly national parks.
- Alert: A small Canadian station on the northern coast that is among the northernmost permanently inhabited communities on Earth.
Tips for Visiting Ellesmere Island #
- Travel only with experienced Arctic operators and charter flights or ice-class vessels - Ellesmere Island is extreme Arctic wilderness with very limited infrastructure and access is typically via charter from Resolute or by expedition ship. Plan trips for mid-summer (July-early August) when sea ice is at its minimum and short daylight hours give safer access to fjords and wildlife-viewing opportunities. Prioritize guided trips to Quttinirpaaq National Park or major fjords; these remote landscapes and High Arctic wildlife (including muskox and migratory birds) are what most independent travelers cannot reach. Arrange logistics, permits and emergency communications months ahead - there are no regular services on the island and search-and-rescue support is limited.
Best Time to Visit Ellesmere Island #
Visit in the short Arctic summer (July-August) when conditions and access are most manageable.
