Elbe Sandstone Mountains
Mountains Sandstone mountain range famed for towers and climbing
Sandstone massif on the Czech-German border of towers, gorges and carved rock bridges. Hikers and climbers use marked trails to reach viewpoints such as the Pravčická brána and deep river valleys.
The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are a sandstone mountain range straddling the border between southeastern Germany (Saxon Switzerland) and northwest Czech Republic (Bohemian Switzerland). The range is characterised by sheer sandstone cliffs, towers and deep gorges carved along the Elbe and tributary rivers.
On the Czech side, notable highlights include the vast natural sandstone arch Pravčická brána, and the Kamenice River gorges where narrow canyons are navigated by short boat trips. Networked hiking trails, rock formations and lookout points provide multiple viewpoints across valleys and the Elbe corridor.
The landscape was formed over millions of years by erosion of Cretaceous sandstone and later shaped by human use for forestry and small settlements. From the 19th century the area became popular with painters and early tourists, and both sides are now protected as national parks with climbing and recreation managed to conserve fragile rock features.
The range follows the Elbe River valley between the German town of Pirna/Dresden region and the Czech towns around Děčín and Hřensko; the Czech sector is accessed from nearby Děčín and Hřensko and lies along the northwestern edge of the Czech Republic.
- Visiting tips: Trails are well marked on both sides of the border and popular viewpoints such as Pravčická brána and the gorges can be busy in summer; arrive early or visit shoulder seasons for quieter conditions.
- Conservation status: The protected area forms a cross-border landscape with Saxon Switzerland in Germany and is managed by national parks on both sides, offering extensive hiking and rock-climbing routes.
What to See #
- Pravčická brána: Pravčická brána, on the Czech side of the range, is Europe's largest natural sandstone arch with a span of about 26.5 metres and a height of around 16 metres, and serves as a major viewpoint.
- Kamenice gorges and boat trips: The Kamenice River gorges include narrow rock canyons with boat passages and guided small-boat trips through sections such as Edmundova soutěska and Divoká soutěska on the Czech side.
- Hřensko gateway: Hřensko serves as the principal Czech gateway settlement with trailheads and visitor facilities for exploring the Bohemian Switzerland portion of the sandstone landscape.
