El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve

El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve is a protected natural area in northwestern Sonora, Mexico, notable for a volcanic field of cinder cones and maars and for an extensive dune sea. The site conserves a striking interface of volcanic terrain and active sand dunes in the Sonoran Desert.

Key attractions include large volcanic craters and black lava fields formed by the Pinacate volcanic field, and the Gran Desierto de Altar dune complex with active sand movement and wide, unbroken desert vistas. The area is important for desert-adapted plants and animals and for scientific study of geomorphology and desert ecology.
