El Fuerte de Samaipata is a pre-Columbian archaeological complex in eastern Bolivia noted for a large carved rock panel and associated settlement remains. The site shows evidence of successive occupations, including pre-Inca peoples, Inca expansion, and later Spanish contact.
Key visible features include an expansive rock that bears carved niches, ramps and petroglyphs, plus terraces and plazas cut into the surrounding landscape. How to Get to El Fuerte de Samaipata #
El Fuerte de Samaipata sits just outside the town of Samaipata in Santa Cruz Department. From Santa Cruz de la Sierra drive southwest to Samaipata (the drive is commonly quoted at around 2-3 hours); regular intercity minibuses and buses run from Santa Cruz to Samaipata from the city’s bus terminals.
The archaeological site is a short taxi ride or a 15-30 minute walk from the center of Samaipata; local taxis and mototaxis are the normal way to reach the hilltop site from town.

- Go early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and the small tour groups that arrive later; the archaeological complex is compact, so early visits are quieter and cooler for exploring the rock carvings.
- Enter from the town of Samaipata and include the small museum in town-many visitors skip the museum and local historical displays that put the site's pre-Columbian and colonial layers into context.
- Combine the fortress visit with a short walk around the surrounding park and nearby colonial-era streets of Samaipata to see vernacular architecture and local crafts that most day-trippers miss.
