El Castillo, Chichen Itza
Temple Maya step pyramid central to Chichén Itzá rituals
The stepped pyramid at Chichén Itzá, El Castillo anchors the Maya site; tourists come for archaeological tours, its precise alignments and guided history walks.
El Castillo (the Temple of Kukulcán) is the principal pyramid at the Chichén Itzá archaeological site in Yucatán, Mexico, and is a central example of Maya architecture. It served as a stepped pyramid-temple dedicated to the feathered serpent deity Kukulcán and is one of the most visited pre-Columbian monuments in Mexico.
The structure is a stepped pyramid with four sides and a staircase on each side; each stairway plus the top platform yields a total of 365 steps, an apparent solar calendar reference. The pyramid is best known for the seasonal light-and-shadow effect along its northwest balustrade that resembles a serpent during the equinoxes, drawing large numbers of visitors for those dates.
Architecturally the pyramid dates to the Terminal Classic and Early Postclassic periods of Maya construction at Chichén Itzá and sits at the heart of the larger ceremonial city, which contains plazas, ballcourts, and other monumental structures.
The pyramid stands in the Chichén Itzá archaeological zone in northern Yucatán state; the site is accessible from nearby towns and is a major tourist destination in the region.
- Step count: Each of the four stairways has 91 steps; counting the platform at the top gives a total of 365 steps, corresponding to the solar year.
- Equinox phenomenon: During the spring and autumn equinoxes a play of light and shadow creates a descending serpent illusion along the pyramid's northwest balustrade.
