El Capitan
Mountain Massive granite monolith popular with rock climbers
A granite monolith in Yosemite Valley, El Capitan is a global draw for big‑wall climbers, photographers and hikers seeking valley viewpoints and sheer granite faces.
El Capitan is a prominent granite massif on the north side of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, California, and is one of the most famous climbing objectives in the world. Its near-vertical west face is famed for its scale and technical difficulty.
The principal attraction is the long, steep granite face used for big-wall climbing routes that take multiple days; the most famous route, The Nose, was first climbed as a big-wall ascent and remains a benchmark of aid and free climbing. Popular viewing spots for the formation include Tunnel View and El Capitan Meadow, where the full face can be seen rising from the valley floor.
Geologically the formation is a Cretaceous granite pluton that was exposed and sculpted by uplift and glacial erosion to form the sheer cliffs seen today. The site has become central to the history of big-wall climbing and modern free-solo techniques.
El Capitan stands within Yosemite Valley in the Sierra Nevada mountains, inside Yosemite National Park in central California. The cliff is immediately adjacent to park roads and valley viewpoints, with Yosemite Village and other visitor facilities nearby.
- Height: The main vertical face rises roughly 900 metres (about 3,000 feet) from the Yosemite Valley floor, making it one of the largest exposed granite monoliths in the world.
