Ekron
Archaeological Site Ancient Philistine city and archaeological tell near Ashdod
Excavated at Tel Miqne, Ekron ranks among the Philistine city‑states named in the Bible; visitors study Iron Age remains, olive‑oil workshops and inscriptions alongside archaeological displays.
Ekron is the name of an ancient Philistine city identified with the archaeological site Tel Miqne in Israel’s central coastal region. The site was an important Philistine urban centre during the Iron Age.
Archaeological excavations have revealed city fortifications, domestic quarters and industrial areas; notable finds include large olive-oil presses and storage installations dating to the 7th century BCE, indicating organized production and trade. An inscription discovered at the site has been used to link the tell to the historical city of Ekron.
The city was occupied through the Iron Age and shows evidence of Philistine culture, later interactions with neighboring states, and economic activity that continued into the late Iron Age. Excavations in the late 20th century clarified its occupational history and material culture.
The tell sits in Israel’s Central District, inland from the Mediterranean coast, within the modern coastal plain and near contemporary towns in the region.
- Ekron inscription: Excavations at the site uncovered an inscribed royal dedication that confirmed the identification of the tell as ancient Ekron.
