Ek’ Balam is a pre-Columbian Maya archaeological site in Yucatán, Mexico, notable for its monumental Acropolis and finely modelled stucco facades. The site dates mainly to the Late Classic period and is a prominent regional ceremonial centre.
The principal attraction is the Acropolis, a large multi-roomed pyramid complex that contains elaborate stucco sculpture and an internal funerary chamber interpreted as a royal tomb. Visitors also see a ballcourt, plaza groups and raised causeways connecting different parts of the site.
Archaeological work has shown intensive Late Classic construction phases with earlier occupation beneath the visible monuments; restoration and limited consolidation have made parts of the Acropolis accessible to visitors. The site interprets elite architecture, monumental sculpture and civic spaces from the Classic Maya period.
