Castle Renaissance moated castle with extensive gardens and museums
Renaissance water castle on Funen surrounded by moats and landscaped grounds, housing collections of vintage cars, motorcycles and agricultural machinery. Visitors tour the interiors, specialist museums and formal gardens.
Egeskov Castle is a Renaissance water castle on the island of Funen in southern Denmark, originally completed in 1554. It is noted for being a well-preserved moated castle set within extensive gardens and parkland.
The fortified moated main building contains furnished historical interiors and period architecture. Surrounding the castle are formal gardens, an arboretum, a hedge maze and museum complexes that include large collections of vintage cars, motorcycles and agricultural machinery.
Construction of the present castle was completed in 1554 during the late Renaissance period; it was built on oak piles in a wetland site and has been altered by successive owners but retains its moated plan. Over the centuries the estate evolved from a fortified residence to a heritage attraction with added museums and garden layouts.
Egeskov sits near the village of Kværndrup on Funen (Fyn), in the South Denmark region, roughly a short drive southeast of the city of Odense and set in cultivated agricultural countryside.
- Best time to visit: Gardens are at their most colourful in late spring and summer, when formal beds and the arboretum are in bloom.
- Visitor time: Ticketing commonly combines castle interior access with the museums and gardens, which are spread across the estate and require around 2-3 hours to see comfortably.
