Main image

A federal wildlife refuge in southern New Jersey that protects coastal marshes, back-bay waters and barrier island habitats along the Atlantic coast. The refuge provides critical habitat for migratory birds and coastal wildlife.

Publicly accessible observation points, seasonal trails and guided programmes are provided at selected locations within the refuge to support birdwatching and wildlife interpretation. Most habitat areas are managed for conservation and are seasonally sensitive to disturbance.

Formed by the consolidation and expansion of coastal conservation lands, the refuge was later named for Congressman Edwin B. Forsythe in recognition of his conservation work; it is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The refuge stretches along New Jersey’s coastal bays and marshes near Atlantic City and Brigantine, covering multiple non-contiguous units that include both mainland marshes and barrier island sections.

  • Wildlife importance: Important stopover and wintering habitat on the Atlantic Flyway, supporting large numbers of migratory shorebirds and waterfowl
