East Rennell is the southern portion of Rennell Island in the Solomon Islands and is a UNESCO World Heritage natural site recognised for its raised coral atoll landscape, endemic species and cultural continuity. The area combines a forested limestone plateau with steep coastal cliffs and an interior lagoon system.

The core feature is Lake Tegano, a large brackish lake set within the raised coral structure that supports mangroves, distinctive freshwater and marine-influenced ecosystems, and a range of endemic plants and birds. The island’s habitats are important for biodiversity and for the traditional lifestyles of local communities.

The site lies on Rennell Island in the southern Solomons and comprises lowland forest, coastal terraces and the central lake; it is located several hundred kilometres southeast of the national capital, Honiara.

  • Lake Tegano significance: Lake Tegano is the largest lake in the insular Pacific and is central to the site's ecology and cultural life, hosting unique aquatic and shoreline species.

What to See #

How to Get to East Rennell #

East Rennell is remote. The usual gateway is Honiara (Solomon Islands capital); domestic flights operate from Honiara to Rennell Island’s main airstrip at Tigoa (service is limited and seasonal). From Tigoa you must continue by local road and/or boat to reach East Rennell (Lake Tegano) - travel is by unpaved tracks, 4x4 and coastal/lagoon boats and can take several hours.

Visitors should plan for irregular transport, arrange local guides or charter transport in advance, and expect overland/boat transfers rather than paved roads.

Tips for Visiting East Rennell #

  • Expect remote access: East Rennell is reached by local boat and requires permission from the provincial authorities and the island's customary owners-arrange transport, permits and a locally based guide in advance (usually from Rennell's main settlements) rather than trying to self-organize on arrival.
  • Plan your visit for the Solomon Islands' dry season (roughly May-October) when sea conditions are calmer and trails around Lake Tegano are more passable; during the wet season boat crossings and inland tracks become much harder.
  • Respect community rules and conservation measures: guided visits keep impact low and are the only practical way to visit many of the lake's shoreline sites safely and with the necessary local support.
