East Frisian Islands
Islands Chain of North Sea islands off Germany's northwest coast
Chain of North Sea islands off Lower Saxony bordering the Wadden Sea, including car‑free destinations like Juist and Norderney. Visitors cycle, use sandy beaches and join guided mudflat (Watt) walks at low tide.
The East Frisian Islands are a chain of barrier islands in the southern North Sea off the coast of Lower Saxony in northwest Germany, separating the Wadden Sea from the open sea. The group includes several inhabited islands and numerous smaller sandbanks and tidal flats.
The islands are valued for long sandy beaches, dune systems, protected tidal flats and low-rise, often car-free resort villages; ferry connections link each inhabited island to the mainland. They are popular for beach holidays, birdwatching, cycling and guided mudflat walks across the Wadden Sea.
The islands developed through tidal and storm processes over many centuries and have been settled and used by Frisian communities since the Middle Ages. Over time human engineering has shaped dunes and harbour facilities while conservation measures now limit development in large parts of the islands.
Geographically they lie off Lower Saxony’s coast in the southern Wadden Sea between the Ems and Weser estuaries, forming a continuous island arc parallel to the mainland coast.
- Inhabited islands count: Seven East Frisian Islands are permanently inhabited: Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge.
- Conservation status: Most islands form part of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park and lie within the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage area, with large intertidal flats and strict conservation rules.
What to See #
- Borkum: Borkum - the largest and most westerly inhabited island with a commercial ferry port and year-round services.
- Juist: Juist - a narrow, elongated island known for long sandy beaches and low-rise, tourism-oriented development.
- Norderney: Norderney - a larger resort island with established tourist infrastructure and protected dune landscapes.
- Other inhabited islands: Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog, Wangerooge - smaller inhabited islands notable for dunes, beaches and largely car-free village centres; each has regular ferry links to the mainland.
How to Get to East Frisian Islands #
The East Frisian Islands are reached by ferry from several North Sea ports on the Lower Saxony coast. Major ferry terminals include Norddeich Mole (train connections from Emden/Oldenburg via Deutsche Bahn) for Norderney and Juist, and Emden or Bensersiel for other islands; ferries run regularly and schedules vary by island and season. If driving, Norddeich is about 30 km north of Emden and roughly 120 km from Bremen; at Norddeich the ferry terminal is adjacent to the Norddeich Mole railway station, a short walk from the train platforms.
Tips for Visiting East Frisian Islands #
- Check and book ferry timetables well in advance during July-August peak season-crossings are limited and day-trip schedules fill quickly.
- Time a visit to coincide with low tide and join a certified Watt (mudflat) guide for safe excursions across the Wadden Sea, which are possible from several islands but dangerous on your own.
- Pick an island depending on the experience you want: some East Frisian islands are largely car-free and quieter (ideal for relaxation), while others have more facilities and day-trippers; arriving early in the day reduces crowding.
Best Time to Visit East Frisian Islands #
Best visited late spring through early autumn for beach-friendly weather and island activities; May and September offer a quieter experience.
