Main image

Easdale is a small inhabited island in the Slate Islands group off the west coast of Scotland, in Argyll and Bute. It is historically associated with sea‑bed slate quarrying which shaped the island’s economy and landscape.

Slate extraction on Easdale expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries and the island’s quarries were among the most productive in the area before many workings flooded and commercial quarrying declined in the early 20th century. Since then the island has shifted from large-scale industry to small-scale local residence and tourism.

Easdale sits within the inner Hebridean island group off Scotland’s west coast, adjacent to the larger island of Seil and within easy boat distance of the Argyll mainland and towns on the west coast of Scotland.

  • Stone Skimming: The island hosts the annual World Stone Skimming Championships, a long-running local event drawing international participants.

How to Get to Easdale #

Easdale is reached by a five-minute passenger ferry from Ellenabeich on Seil (the ferry is frequent in summer; check local timetables). From Oban or Glasgow, drive southwest onto the A816 then local roads to Seil; the island lies a short drive across the Clachan Bridge (the “Bridge Over the Atlantic”). The ferry pier is a short walk from the village centre in Ellenabeich.

Tips for Visiting Easdale #

  • Take the tiny passenger ferry from Ellenabeich rather than trying to time a private boat - the crossing is two minutes and arrives right by the small pier.
  • The best light for photographs is late afternoon when the slate pools pick up the sky; midges can be bad in calm summer weather, so bring a head net if planning to linger.
  • Visit the local community-run café (check opening days) and ask about the quarry pools - most visitors miss how suddenly water fills the old workings.
