The Early Christian Necropolis of Pécs is a group of Late Roman burial sites in the city of Pécs, Baranya County, Hungary, notable for its painted tombs and early Christian funerary architecture. The surviving chambers and mausoleums date mainly from the 4th to 6th centuries AD.
The site contains multiple rock-cut and masonry tombs with interior wall paintings and decorated burial chambers that illustrate funerary styles and Christian iconography of the period. The painted tombs and architectural forms are the principal reasons people visit the necropolis and study its art-historical importance.
The cemetery complex developed as the burial area of the Roman city of Sopianae and was used through late antiquity into the early medieval period. The surviving monuments were preserved under later settlement layers and became the focus of archaeological investigation and conservation from the 19th and 20th centuries onward.
The necropolis sites lie within and around the modern city of Pécs, on the southern slopes of the Mecsek hills and within the urban fabric of Baranya County.
- Dating: The necropolis dates to the late Roman period and early Byzantine era, roughly the 4th to 6th centuries AD.
- UNESCO World Heritage: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 for its well-preserved burial chambers and wall paintings from the early Christian period.
