Eanna developed as Uruk’s primary cultic quarter and was rebuilt repeatedly across prehistoric and historic periods as the city grew. It played a central role in the religious and civic life of Uruk throughout the early Bronze Age and later Mesopotamian history.
The ruins are located within the ancient city area of Uruk (modern Warka) in southern Iraq, on the alluvial plain of the Euphrates in the region of ancient Sumer.
- Antiquity: Formed as the religious quarter of the ancient city of Uruk, the precinct was associated with worship of the goddess Inanna and shows building phases from the 4th millennium BCE onward.
- Archaeological note: Archaeological remains include temple foundations and mudbrick structures that illustrate early urban and religious architecture in southern Mesopotamia.
