Dzordzor Chapel
Religious Site Medieval Armenian chapel relocated to avoid flooding
An Armenian chapel in West Azerbaijan province, Dzordzor Chapel was dismantled and relocated to prevent flooding from a reservoir; visitors study its stone masonry, ecclesiastical plan, and carved details of Armenian church architecture.
Dzordzor Chapel is a small medieval Armenian Christian chapel in West Azerbaijan province in northwest Iran, included in the Armenian Monastic Ensembles UNESCO inscription. It is notable for its medieval stone architecture and its inclusion in a transnational heritage listing.
The site consists of a compact stone chapel and associated remains set in a rural landscape; the building is modest in scale compared with larger monasteries. Visitors note the preserved masonry and simple interior plan typical of Armenian ecclesiastical buildings.
The chapel originates in the medieval period and represents the Armenian Christian presence in the region. In the 1980s the structure was dismantled and reconstructed at a higher site to protect it from flooding caused by the creation of a reservoir.
The chapel sits in northwest Iran’s West Azerbaijan province near the town of Maku, in a rural area close to the Turkey border.
- UNESCO listing: Part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Armenian Monastic Ensembles of Iran," inscribed in 2008.
- Relocation: The chapel was moved stone by stone to a higher location in the 1980s to avoid inundation by a reservoir.
