Dzharylhach
Island Long sandbar island and nature reserve in Black Sea
A long sandy island in Kherson Oblast, Dzharylhach is Ukraine’s largest uninhabited island, known for miles of sandbars, salt marshes and migratory birds. Summer boat trips from Skadovsk bring beachgoers, birdwatchers and nature photographers.
Dzharylhach is a low-lying, largely uninhabited island in the Black Sea off the coast of Kherson Oblast in southern Ukraine. It is known for extensive sandbanks, beaches and natural steppe habitat.
The island’s landscape is dominated by dunes, saline meadows and shallow coastal waters that support birdlife and coastal flora; it is used seasonally by visitors for swimming and nature observation. There are few permanent structures and access is by boat from the mainland.
The island has not served as a major urban centre; its significance is ecological and recreational rather than administrative. Preservation of coastal habitats has been a focus in recent decades.
Dzharylhach lies off the Ukrainian mainland in the northern Black Sea, within Kherson Oblast, and is reachable by boat from nearby coastal settlements.
- Beaches and shallow waters: The island is notable for long sandy and shallow beaches that are accessible at low tide and attract day visitors in summer.
