Main image

Dzanga-Ndoki National Park is a protected lowland rainforest area in the southwestern Central African Republic and forms part of the Dzanga-Sangha Protected Areas. It is internationally noted for its intact Congo Basin forest habitats.

The park includes the well-known forest clearing Dzanga Bai, a focal point for large mammals where elephants, buffalo and other species concentrate and can be observed from a raised platform. The Ndoki sector contains extensive primary rainforest and is important for western lowland gorillas and other forest species; guided tracking and observational hides are common visitor activities.

The protected area was created through agreements between the Central African Republic and conservation partners to conserve biodiversity and support research and community-based tourism from the late 20th century onward. Scientific monitoring and limited ecotourism have been important management tools.

The park lies in Sangha-Mbaéré prefecture in the country’s southwest, near the small town of Bayanga and close to the borders with Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo. The landscape is lowland rainforest crossed by rivers and seasonally flooded clearings.

  • Dzanga Bai viewpoint: A raised platform at Dzanga Bai provides one of the most reliable places in the region to observe forest elephants and other large mammals at close range.
  • Access: Access is remote; most visits are arranged from the nearby settlement of Bayanga and combine river travel, 4x4 tracks and guided walks.
  • Best time to visit: Dry months improve visibility at forest clearings and make river travel easier for safari-style wildlife viewing.
