Durlston Country Park is a coastal country park and nature reserve on Durlston Head near Swanage in Dorset, England. The park sits on a headland that forms part of the Jurassic Coast and includes Victorian-era features and cliff-top paths.

The estate and its stone features were developed in the late 19th century by estate owners who created the castle and carved globe as part of a landscaped headland. Over time the headland has been managed for public access, nature conservation and interpretation of local geology.

The park occupies Durlston Head on the southern side of the Isle of Purbeck, immediately south of Swanage in Dorset. It is reached from Swanage and sits on the English Channel coast within the Jurassic Coast World Heritage area.

  • Viewing points: The headland provides strong views at sunrise and sunset and is a reliable spot for watching seabirds and passing cetaceans on clear days.
  • Visitor facilities: There is a staffed visitor centre at the castle with walking routes and interpretation panels explaining local geology and wildlife.

What to See #

  • Durlston Castle: A mock castle built on the headland in the late 19th century for estate and visitor use, now housing a visitor centre and exhibition space for local natural history and geology.
  • The Great Globe: A Victorian-era carved limestone globe created for the estate, weighing around 40 tonnes and roughly 3 metres in diameter, set near the castle as an educational feature.
  • Coastal cliffs and paths: Limestone cliff and coastal paths along Durlston Head that form part of the wider Jurassic Coast, offering panoramic sea views and regular seabird sightings.
