Durga temple, Aihole

The Durga temple at Aihole is an early Chalukyan-era temple in Aihole, Karnataka, India, dating to the 7th-8th centuries CE, and is notable for its apsidal, or semi-circular, rear and encircling veranda. The structure is often cited as an example of experimental plan forms in early medieval Deccan temple architecture.

Architectural features include a curved sanctuary area, a pillared verandah and carved decorative elements on pillars and friezes; the building reads as a compact shrine designed for ritual circulation. The site’s name derives from a fortified-appearance wall (durg) rather than a dedication to the goddess Durga, and the temple is one of many early monuments clustered through the Aihole group.
