Dura-Europos church

The Dura-Europos church is an early Christian house church discovered at the Roman frontier town of Dura-Europos on the Euphrates in eastern Syria. It dates to the mid-3rd century AD and is one of the earliest known purpose-adapted Christian worship spaces.

Prominent features include a small baptistery with well-preserved wall paintings depicting biblical scenes, and a series of rooms refitted for congregational use within a domestic building. The painted panels in the baptistery are especially important for the study of early Christian iconography and liturgical arrangement.

Archaeological excavation in the 1920s exposed the church and its painted decoration; the finds have been central to scholarship on early Christian architecture and visual culture. The site itself is located within the broader remains of the Roman town of Dura-Europos on the Euphrates frontier.

It lies on the eastern fringe of the Syrian desert, at the archaeological site of Dura-Europos which sits on the Euphrates river plain in Deir ez-Zor Governorate.
