Dura-Europos

Dura-Europos is an archaeological site on the Euphrates River in what is now eastern Syria, founded in the Hellenistic period and occupied by successive imperial powers. It is known for extraordinary preservation of wall paintings and domestic structures.

The site contains a remarkably intact synagogue with extensive murals, an early Christian house church with painted scenes, private houses, temples and city defenses that span Hellenistic, Parthian and Roman phases. Excavations in the 1920s and 1930s produced many of the site’s most famous finds.

Dura-Europos was founded in the Hellenistic era and later incorporated into Roman territory; it was besieged and captured by Sassanian Persian forces in the mid-3rd century CE and subsequently abandoned as a provincial settlement.

The ruins lie on the modern border region of Syria’s Deir ez-Zor Governorate and occupy a strategic bluff on the Euphrates that reflects the city’s historical role as a frontier and trade site.

• Archaeological excavations: Excavations in the 1920s and 1930s revealed exceptional wall paintings and domestic architecture, with many finds removed to museums before the site's later abandonment.
• Founding and fall: The city was founded in the Hellenistic period and fell to Persian/Sassanian forces in the mid-3rd century CE, after which it was abandoned.

• Synagogue: A well-preserved synagogue notable for extensive wall paintings and inscriptions dating from the 3rd century CE, one of the most important ancient Jewish religious sites discovered.
• House church: A Christian house church that includes some of the earliest known Christian wall paintings, excavated within a domestic compound inside the city.
• City walls and layout: Extensive city fortifications, gates and the urban grid that reveal the city's Hellenistic foundation and later Roman and Parthian phases of occupation.
