The Duomo di Pienza is the cathedral of Pienza in Tuscany, Italy, rebuilt as part of Pope Pius II’s urban programme and completed in the mid 15th century. Its construction between 1459 and 1462 makes it an early example of Renaissance civic and ecclesiastical design.
The cathedral occupies the principal side of Piazza Pio II and is noted for its harmonious Renaissance proportions and stone façade. Inside, the nave and chapels retain the 15th-century spatial arrangement set out during the town’s reconstruction.
Pienza was remade as an ideal Renaissance town under Pope Pius II (Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini), who commissioned the cathedral and surrounding civic buildings in the late 1450s and early 1460s. The Duomo replaced an earlier parish church as part of that programme.
The cathedral stands at the heart of Pienza in the Val d’Orcia region of Tuscany, within the historic town centre that was largely reshaped during the Renaissance project initiated by Pius II.
