Castle Dramatic coastal medieval castle ruins on Northumberland shore.
On the Northumberland coast, Dunstanburgh Castle’s medieval ruins sit above sandy bays; walkers and photographers follow coastal paths from nearby villages to explore battlements and sea views.
Dunstanburgh Castle is a ruined medieval fortress on a rocky headland on the Northumberland coast in north-east England, originally built in the early 14th century by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster. The site is known for its long curtain walls and two prominent towers set against a coastal landscape.
The ruin sits directly on a coastal promontory between small villages, where sea winds and erosion frame views of the curtain walls and towers from the headland paths. The castle fell into disuse and partial dismantling in later centuries and survives today as a dramatic ruin visited by walkers and history visitors.
The castle occupies a prominent coastal position on the Northumberland shoreline and forms part of the coastal path and landscape of medieval fortifications in the region.
- Management and visitor use: The castle is managed and maintained by English Heritage and is a popular coastal ruin for walkers on the Northumberland coast path.
