Dunn's River Falls
Waterfall Terraced waterfall and popular natural swimming attraction
A terraced waterfall at Ocho Rios, Dunn’s River Falls offers guided climbs across limestone cascades and a beachfront park; tourists form human chains to ascend the falls.
Dunn’s River Falls is a terraced limestone waterfall on Jamaica’s north coast in Saint Ann Parish, close to Ocho Rios. The cascade is about 180 metres long and is notable for flowing directly into the Caribbean Sea.
The site is best known for the stepped travertine terraces and shallow pools that can be climbed from base to top. The main attraction is the guided waterfall climb using handholds on the rock and group “human chains.” There are also viewing platforms, a beach area where the river meets the sea, and a developed park with visitor facilities.
The falls are a natural travertine formation that has been managed as a park and tourist attraction through the 20th and 21st centuries. Management focuses on visitor access and protection of the cascades.
The falls sit just west of the town of Ocho Rios on Jamaica’s north coast in Saint Ann Parish, reachable by a short drive from the Ocho Rios port and town centre.
- Climb the falls: Climbing is organised on-site; many visitors join guided groups and form human chains to ascend the terraced rock steps.
- Timing and viewpoints: Best visited early in the day to avoid large cruise-ship crowds from nearby Ocho Rios; there are viewing platforms and a small beach at the base.
