Dunnottar Castle
Ruins Dramatic cliff-top medieval castle ruins on North Sea
Perched on a rocky headland near Stonehaven, Dunnottar Castle offers ruined medieval walls, sheer North Sea cliffs and coastal views; visitors come for the atmosphere of its fortified remains and nearby walks along the Scottish shoreline.
Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress perched on a steep, isolated headland on the North Sea coast of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The site is renowned for its dramatic coastal setting and extensive visible masonry dating mainly to the late medieval and early modern periods.
The castle complex includes a gatehouse, curtain walls, a keep and a chapel, all clustered on the rocky promontory and linked by narrow paths and terraces. The exposed cliff-top position and ruined walls create multiple viewpoints over the sea and the shoreline below, which are frequent highlights for visitors.
A defensive site from the medieval period, Dunnottar’s surviving structures date largely from the 14th to 17th centuries and the castle played roles in Scottish medieval conflict and later civil-war era events. It is particularly noted for its association with the hiding of the Honours of Scotland during the 17th century.
Dunnottar sits about 2.5 to 3 km south of the town of Stonehaven on the northeast coast of Scotland, accessible by a short road and footpath from the nearest car park. The headland is entirely surrounded by sea cliffs, creating a compact, cliff-top archaeological site.
- Honours of Scotland: The Honours of Scotland (the Scottish crown jewels) were reputedly hidden at the site in 1651 to keep them out of English hands during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
- Access and conditions: Accessible from a car park on the clifftop via a short walk; the headland location offers panoramic sea views and strong coastal winds, so dress for exposed conditions.
What to See #
- Keep and courtyard: A ruined medieval keep and inner courtyard that form the castle's defensive heart, with surviving masonry mostly dating from the 14th to 16th centuries and open to visitors to explore.
- Chapel and ranges: The chapel and domestic ranges where traces of medieval and early modern domestic architecture remain; these structures sit close to the cliff edge and are visible from the headland path.
- Gatehouse and walls: The gatehouse and curtain walls that mark the principal approach into the site and provide dramatic viewpoints over the sea and the headland.

- Arrive early in the day to avoid coach crowds and to catch the light across the North Sea from the cliff path.
