Dunadd is an early medieval fortified site in western Scotland that served as a principal royal center of the kingdom of Dál Riata. It occupies a rocky hill with visible earthwork defences and exposed carved stones.
The site contains a carved stone slab with a carved footprint and ogham-style inscriptions, features interpreted as symbols used in royal inauguration or ceremonial practice. Excavations have revealed fortifications, terraces and evidence of occupation from the Iron Age into the early medieval period.
Dunadd was an important political and ceremonial center for Dál Riata between roughly the 6th and 9th centuries AD, after which its political significance declined and the site fell out of use. Later archaeological work has focused on mapping the fortifications and recording carved stones and artefacts.
It stands in Argyll on a prominent hill above the River Add, within the wider Kilmartin Glen area of prehistoric and historic monuments and is accessible from nearby villages and roads in western Scotland.
- Carved footprint and inscriptions: The carved footprint stone and ogham inscriptions are commonly interpreted as ritual markers associated with kingship and inauguration ceremonies.
- Context and combined visits: The site sits within the Kilmartin Glen archaeological landscape and is often visited together with nearby prehistoric monuments and later medieval remains.
What to See #
- Summit fort and carved stones: A fortified hilltop enclosure with visible ramparts, terraces and a carved rock slab bearing a footprint and ogham-like inscriptions that mark ritual or royal associations.
