Dubai Museum is housed in Al Fahidi Fort in the Al Fahidi Historic District of Bur Dubai and presents the history and traditional life of Dubai and the surrounding region. The museum opened in 1971 and uses the fort’s rooms to display archaeological finds, dioramas and reconstructions of pre-oil Emirati life.
Displays include scale models of old Dubai, recreated souk and house interiors, pearl-diving and fishing scenes, and artefacts recovered from regional archaeological sites. The museum aims to contextualise the city’s rapid transformation by showing daily life, trade and material culture prior to the discovery of oil.
Al Fahidi Fort dates from the late 18th century and was adapted to museum use when the modern cultural programme for Dubai was established in the early 1970s. The building itself is an object of interest as one of the emirate’s oldest standing structures.
