Drottningholm Palace
Building Royal palace residence and UNESCO World Heritage site
Drottningholm Palace on Stockholm’s outskirts serves as a royal residence with formal gardens, a well-preserved 18th-century court theatre, and riverside walks that draw history-minded visitors.
Drottningholm Palace is a royal palace on the island of Lovön, west of central Stockholm, notable for its well-preserved Baroque architecture and historic interiors. It has served as a royal residence for centuries and contains formal gardens, a private palace chapel and an 18th-century court theatre.
Visitors tour state apartments and garden terraces, view the theatre with its original stage machinery and walk formal parterres and parkland including the distinctive Chinese Pavilion. The ensemble is valued for its architectural integrity and for the continuity of use as a royal residence and cultural site.
The present palace complex was largely developed under the Swedish monarchy in the 17th and 18th centuries, with subsequent alterations and conservation work to maintain historic interiors and gardens. The site was recognized for its cultural value in international heritage listings and continues to be managed for public access alongside its residential function.
Drottningholm is located on Lovön island in Lake Mälaren, roughly 10 to 12 kilometers west of central Stockholm, and is accessible by road and boat services from the city.
- UNESCO and current use: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the palace complex includes an 18th-century theatre and a Chinese Pavilion, and parts of the site remain the private residence of the Swedish royal family.
