How to Get to Drachten#

Drachten is best reached by road and regional bus services; it has no passenger rail station. The nearest commercial airports are Groningen Airport Eelde (GRQ) and Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS); from both you continue by train+bus or taxi to reach the town.

By Air

Groningen Airport Eelde (GRQ): GRQ is the closest commercial airport for northern Friesland. From GRQ you can take a taxi to Drachten (drive ~45-60 minutes; typical taxi fare ≈€60-90) or take regional buses into Groningen city (single ~€3.50) and change to an Arriva bus toward Drachten (additional ~€6-8); total public-transport travel time ~1-1.5 hours.

Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS): Schiphol is the main international gateway for Friesland. Take an NS Intercity from Schiphol to Leeuwarden or Groningen (journey ~1.75-2.0 hours, one-way fares typically €20-35 depending on discount/season). From Leeuwarden or Groningen change to an Arriva regional bus to Drachten (bus fare ~€6-8, 40-60 minutes). Total travel time door-to-door using train+bus is typically 2.5-3.5 hours.

By Train & Bus

Train: Drachten has no passenger railway station. The nearest major railheads are Groningen Centraal and Leeuwarden (both served frequently by Nederlandse Spoorwegen). From those stations you catch regional buses to Drachten; train fares to Groningen/Leeuwarden vary by origin (see NS pricing) and journey times depend on origin.

Bus: Regional operator Arriva (and local lines) serve Drachten from Groningen, Leeuwarden and surrounding towns. Typical single fares on regional buses are in the €3.5-8 range and typical intercity bus legs to Drachten take 30-75 minutes depending on origin. Buses are the practical way to reach and leave Drachten.

How to Get Around Drachten#

Drachten is best navigated by a combination of regional buses and cycling; buses link the town to nearby railheads at Groningen and Leeuwarden. For visitors, arriving by train to those cities and finishing by bus is the pragmatic approach; within town, cycling and walking work well.

  • Regional bus (Arriva) (€3.5-8) - Arriva and local bus operators are the main public-transport providers serving Drachten from Groningen, Leeuwarden and other Friesland towns. Buses are frequent on main corridors; expect to change once if arriving by train at Groningen or Leeuwarden. Bring a debit/credit card or OV compatible ticketing (check operator site).
  • Car / Taxi (€60-100 (airport taxi)) - Driving is straightforward on Dutch regional roads; Drachten is well signed from the A7/A32 corridor. Taxis are convenient for door-to-door travel from airports or stations but can be costly for longer distances-expect €60-€100 from nearby airports. Rental cars give flexibility for exploring rural Friesland.
  • Train (to nearby stations) (€10-35 (depends on origin)) - Although Drachten itself has no station, Nederlandse Spoorwegen trains serve Groningen and Leeuwarden, which are the easiest rail gateways. From there take a regional bus to Drachten. Check NS for schedules and fares to those stations.
  • Long-distance coach - Intercity coaches and long-distance buses stop at larger towns in the region; if coming from farther away you may arrive in Groningen or Leeuwarden by coach and transfer to local buses. Coach operators vary by route-book in advance for best fares.
  • Bicycle (€5-15/day (rental)) - Drachten and its surroundings are very bike-friendly with dedicated cycle routes. For short-distance travel inside and around town a bike is often faster than public transport and pleasant in fair weather.
  • Walking - Central Drachten is compact and easily explored on foot; shopping and restaurants are within walking distance of bus stops and the town centre.
