Dovrefjell–Sunndalsfjella National Park
National Park Norwegian mountain park protecting muskox herds and tundra
High mountain plateau and alpine park with tundra, hiking trails and populations of wild reindeer and introduced musk ox; attracts hikers, backcountry skiers and anyone seeking remote mountain routes and panoramic ridgelines.
Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park protects a large mountainous area in central Norway that encompasses alpine plateaus, ridges and deep valleys. The park is internationally recognised for its high-mountain ecosystems and large mammal populations.
The area is particularly known for free-ranging herds of wild reindeer and a non-native musk ox population that has been established in the region; these species are major reasons for conservation and visitor interest. The park also contains characteristic alpine vegetation, river valleys and mountain lakes.
Conservation efforts focus on protecting the alpine environment and its species while permitting regulated outdoor recreation such as hiking and wildlife viewing. Traditional grazing and seasonal use are managed alongside nature protection.
The park spans the Dovrefjell mountain range in central Norway and is approached from routes such as the E6 highway and the Dovre railway, linking it with nearby towns and regional transport corridors.
- Musk oxen population: One of the few places in Norway where wild musk oxen remain free-ranging; sightings are most likely in specific ranges within the park.
- Access via E6 and Dovre railway: Easily approached from the E6 highway and the Dovre railway corridor, with established trailheads for hiking and mountain access.
What to See #
- Snøhetta and high alpine ridges: Snøhetta and surrounding alpine ridges form the highest mountain areas within the park and are focal points for long-distance hiking and mountain access.
- Reindeer and musk ox ranges: Alpine plateaus and valleys that support wild reindeer herds and the established musk ox population are key ecological zones for viewing large mammals.

You can also take the Dovre Line (Dovrebanen) train from Oslo or Trondheim to Dombås or Hjerkinn; Hjerkinn station lies at the park edge and several trailheads are only a few hundred metres’ walk from the station.
Tips for Visiting Dovrefjell–Sunndalsfjella National Park #
- Visit Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella in summer (June-August) when mountain roads and trailheads are open and guided excursions operate; this is the prime time for spotting musk oxen on the high plateau.
- Use the established access points at Dombås and Hjerkinn-both have transport links (train/bus) and trailheads into the park; guided wildlife walks are recommended for musk ox encounters to minimize disturbance and for safety.
- Plan hikes for early morning to avoid afternoon weather changes on the plateau and check local ranger stations for recent trail and wildlife-sighting updates-some lesser-used routes reward hikers with solitude and panoramic views that many day-trippers miss.
