Dover Castle
Castle Medieval fortress overlooking English Channel and White Cliffs
Dover Castle overlooks the English Channel from the White Cliffs, with a Norman keep, wartime tunnels and medieval fortifications. History visitors explore battlements, recreated period rooms and panoramic sea views.
Dover Castle is a major medieval fortress located on the cliffs above the English Channel in Kent, England. Its origins as a royal fortress date to the Norman and Plantagenet periods, and it is one of Britain’s largest castles.
Major construction of the present stone castle occurred in the 12th century under Henry II, who built the Great Tower and reinforced the fortress; Dover’s position made it a key defensive and administrative site over centuries. The castle’s underground passages were repurposed in the 19th and 20th centuries and were used as command centres and shelters during World War II, including involvement in the Dunkirk evacuation period.
Sited on the White Cliffs above the Channel near the town of Dover in southeastern England, the castle overlooks the shortest sea crossing to continental Europe and is about 20 kilometres southeast of Canterbury.
- Major structures: The site includes a medieval keep built in the 12th century and an intact Roman lighthouse that predates the castle, both open to visitors in the scheduled tours.
- Wartime role: Underground passages were adapted and used in the 20th century for military headquarters and as part of the site's WWII defences.
What to See #
- Great Tower: The Great Tower or keep built by Henry II forms the central stronghold and offers views across the surrounding landscape from its battlements.
- Roman lighthouse and tunnels: A Roman-era lighthouse (the Pharos) and extensive underground wartime tunnels used in the 20th century as command centres and shelters.
- Outer defences: Defensive walls, gatehouses and barbicans that demonstrate successive medieval fortification phases and adaptations.
How to Get to Dover Castle #
Dover Castle sits on Castle Hill above Dover town and the ferry/port. From London there are frequent trains to Dover Priory (departures from Victoria/Charing Cross/St Pancras on different services); from Dover Priory station it is a 15-20 minute uphill walk to the castle or a short taxi ride. By car from London follow the M20/A20 into Dover (approximately 120 km / ~75 miles, around 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic); the ferry terminals and cruise berths are a short drive from the castle.
Tips for Visiting Dover Castle #
- Aim to visit early in the day or later in the afternoon on weekdays to avoid school-group surges and peak summer crowds; the castle grounds are expansive so early arrivals let you enjoy quieter views from the battlements.
- Book or check availability for the Second World War 'Secret Wartime Tunnels' tour in advance - the timed tours are popular and can reach capacity, and they are the feature that many visitors prioritize.
- Make time to climb the Great Tower for panoramic views across the white cliffs and English Channel; this vantage point is often missed by visitors who stay only at the lower ramparts.
Best Time to Visit Dover Castle #
Best to visit from late spring through early autumn for full access and milder weather, bearing in mind peak summer crowds.
