Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is a large performing-arts auditorium in downtown Los Angeles, California, and part of the Los Angeles Music Center. It opened in 1964 and is a principal venue for staged opera and large choral performances in the city.

The main auditorium accommodates roughly 3,100 seats and features a proscenium stage used for opera, ballet, and orchestral productions. The pavilion hosts long-form productions that require full stage facilities, orchestra pits, and expansive backstage space.

The building was funded and promoted by civic and private supporters including Dorothy Chandler, after whom it is named, and it became a focus for Los Angeles cultural life from the mid-20th century onward. Over time it has continued to serve as a principal home for major resident companies and touring productions.

The pavilion sits on Bunker Hill in downtown Los Angeles, adjacent to other Music Center buildings and close to Pershing Square and the civic center. It is within walking distance of several downtown hotels and public transit stops.
