Dormition Abbey

Dormition Abbey is a Catholic Benedictine monastery and church on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, known for its distinctive domed church dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. The present complex was built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by the German Benedictines.

The church interior contains religious artwork and a notable mosaic above the entrance, and the monastery includes cloisters and monastic buildings used by the resident community. The site functions both as a place of worship and a pilgrimage destination.

The modern abbey was constructed on a site long associated in Christian tradition with the Dormition and related events; the current buildings date to the period of German-sponsored construction around the turn of the 20th century.

It sits on Mount Zion just outside Jerusalem’s Old City walls, within the Jerusalem District, and is within easy walking distance of major Old City entrances and nearby historic sites.
