Donauinsel
Island Man-made Danube island in Vienna used for recreation
Vienna’s Donauinsel is a long artificial island on the Danube used for cycling, swimming, jogging and the annual Donauinselfest; residents and visitors use its trails, riverside cafés and picnic stretches.
Donauinsel is an artificial island in Vienna formed between the Danube River and the engineered New Danube channel; it serves primarily as flood protection and a major recreational area. The island was constructed as part of comprehensive river regulation and flood-control works for the city.
The island stretches roughly 21 kilometers and contains beaches, parks, cycle and walking paths, sports facilities, and event spaces, making it a principal outdoor leisure area for Vienna. It is well known for hosting the large free open-air Donauinselfest and for year-round recreational use by residents and visitors.
Construction of the island and the adjacent New Danube was undertaken during the late 20th century as part of Vienna’s response to major flood risk, creating a controlled secondary channel and a continuous green corridor. Since completion, the island has been integrated into the city’s public-space planning and flood management.
Donauinsel runs through the city of Vienna, dividing the Danube’s main channel from the New Danube flood-control channel; it is readily accessible from multiple districts along the river system.
- Size and purpose: The island is approximately 21 kilometers long and was created as part of Vienna's Danube flood-control works; it functions as an extensive linear park with paths for cycling and walking.
- Major public festival: It hosts the Donauinselfest, a large free open-air festival that is held annually and draws very large public crowds to the island's stages and open spaces.
What to See #
- Neue Donau (New Danube): A long engineered channel called the New Danube (Neue Donau) that runs parallel to the main Danube and forms the island's western side as part of the flood protection system.
- Copa Cagrana and recreation zones: A wide riverside recreational zone and beach area with bars, sports facilities, and event spaces located on the island's eastern banks and along the New Danube.
How to Get to Donauinsel #
Donauinsel is easiest reached by public transit. Use the U6 metro to Neue Donau or Kaisermühlen/VIC (U1) for northern access; Reichsbrücke (U1/U2) serves mid-island points. Bicycle paths run the island’s full length and connect to Vienna’s city-cycle network; car access is available but parking can be limited during festivals.
Tips for Visiting Donauinsel #
- Bring insect repellent in summer-the Danube's quays and reed beds harbor many midges.
- Use the U6 (New Danube) or U1/U2 to get near Donauinsel; Reichsbrücke (U1/U2) or Kaisermühlen/VIC (U1) are common drop-offs.
- Bike the full 21-km island rather than walking-rentals are available near the UNO City area.
- Avoid peak heat between 2-5pm in July-August on the open southern beaches; early morning is pleasantly cool.
Best Time to Visit Donauinsel #
Donauinsel is best in late spring through early autumn for outdoor activities; summer hosts the heaviest crowds and festivals.
