Donauinsel

Donauinsel is an artificial island in Vienna formed between the Danube River and the engineered New Danube channel; it serves primarily as flood protection and a major recreational area. The island was constructed as part of comprehensive river regulation and flood-control works for the city.

The island stretches roughly 21 kilometers and contains beaches, parks, cycle and walking paths, sports facilities, and event spaces, making it a principal outdoor leisure area for Vienna. It is well known for hosting the large free open-air Donauinselfest and for year-round recreational use by residents and visitors.

Construction of the island and the adjacent New Danube was undertaken during the late 20th century as part of Vienna’s response to major flood risk, creating a controlled secondary channel and a continuous green corridor. Since completion, the island has been integrated into the city’s public-space planning and flood management.

Donauinsel runs through the city of Vienna, dividing the Danube’s main channel from the New Danube flood-control channel; it is readily accessible from multiple districts along the river system.

• Copa Cagrana and recreation zones: A wide riverside recreational zone and beach area with bars, sports facilities, and event spaces located on the island's eastern banks and along the New Danube.
