Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service refuge on the southern shore of San Francisco Bay in California that conserves tidal marshes, mudflats and associated bay habitats. The refuge encompasses multiple separate units across the South Bay and is a key urban-area sanctuary for migratory birds.

The refuge offers boardwalks, trails and observation platforms through restored marsh and salt pond landscapes, with seasonally rich birdlife including shorebirds and waterfowl. Several visitor facilities provide exhibits and guided programs, and popular access points include areas around Alviso and other South Bay units.

The refuge was established to protect remaining tidal marsh and bay habitats in the South Bay as urban development expanded around the bay. Management by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has focused on habitat acquisition, restoration of tidal flows and public education through visitor programs.

Units of the refuge lie along the southern edge of San Francisco Bay within Santa Clara and Alameda counties, with principal public access points near Alviso, Fremont and other South Bay communities and within driving distance of San Jose and the broader Bay Area.
